About Us

Founded in January of 1958 and based in Monroe, WI, First Baptist Church has worked hard to become a place where believers grow in their faith and the Gospel is preached.  We believe in the authority of Scripture and its work in our lives and the lives of those around us.  We strive to have a comfortable atmosphere where everyone is welcome.

Pastor Matthew Spoonhour is a graduate of Tennessee Temple University and Maranatha Baptist University.  He came to First Baptist in May of 2005.  He and his wife Mary have 5 children.  Pastor Spoonhour firmly believes in preaching through the Word of God whether it is on a particular topic or book by book.  He believes that God has called all of us to reach our community with the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

The Gospel

What is the Gospel and how does it apply to me?

You see, we are all born into sin.  Romans 3:23 says, “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.”  Our sin separates us from a holy and just God who loves us.  Because of His love for us He made a way for our relationship with Him to be restored again.  He himself came in the form of a human called Jesus to live a perfect life and die in our place taking all of our sin upon Him. 2 Corinthians 5:21, “For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.”

Jesus did not stay dead however.  He rose from the dead three days later.  He became our substitute for sin so we could take part in His righteousness.  Romans 10:9 says, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.” When we recognize our sin, turn from it and ask the holy God to forgive us and cleanse us, He then takes our sin and gives us His righteousness.

If you have done this or would like to talk to someone more about it, won’t you contact us?  We would love to hear from you!  Call us at (608) 325-2250.
